Type de Document

Mots clés

Case Head Notes: Hassan Ishag Ahmed, a Sudanese journalist, was arrested in June 2014 after reporting on the arrest of an opposition party leader. He was beaten during interrogation and detained for 101 days without charge under Sudan’s Emergency Law. He was held in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions and denied adequate medical care. He was released without being charged and later fled to Kenya. The African Commission found Sudan responsible for violating Articles 1, 5, 6, 7(1)(d), 9(2) and 16 of the African Charter, covering torture and ill-treatment, arbitrary detention, fair trial, freedom of expression and the right to health. It ordered Sudan to provide compensation, investigate and prosecute those responsible, reform relevant laws and strengthen safeguards against torture and arbitrary detention.
