THE PARTIES
1. The Applicants,
Werema Wangoko Werema and Waisiri Wangoko Werema are
nationals of the United Republic of Tanzania (hereinafter, the Respondent State).
The Applicants were sentenced to thirty (30) years' imprisonment each for the
crime of armed robbery.
2. The Respondent
State became a Party to the African Charter on Human and
Peoples' Rights (hereinafter referred to as "the Charted') on 21 October 1986, and
to the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights on the
Establishment of an African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights (hereinafter
referred to as "the Protocol") on 10 February 2006. Furthermore, on 29 March

the Respondent State deposited the declaration required under Article 34
(6) of the Protocol, accepting the jurisdiction of the Court to receive cases from
