ENGLISH Principles and Guidelines on Human and Peoples’ Rights while Countering Terrorism in Africa |  23 (iv) Conditions of Detention and Imprisonment: States shall ensure that all persons under any form of detention or imprisonment are treated in a humane manner and with respect for the inherent dignity of the human person. This includes the protection of physical and mental health as well as appropriate provisions for living accommodation, personal hygiene, clothing and bedding, food, religious practices, exercise and sport, and medical service. States shall prohibit practices that violate human dignity such as solitary confinement, using instruments of restraint as punishment, and withholding as punishment or otherwise food, water, and other such items necessary for respecting humanity and dignity.
